“You were forcing me to feel guilty about having wounds, you pretended my emotions weren’t real, you dramatized your most tiny problems until they looked more important than my whole life struggles, you punished me over and over again for “not following your rules” and you had the fucking nerve to pretend that I was the toxic one.”
I am a white female teenager and when I saw Black Panther, I liked it because it really is a great movie.
But I have a friend who is half Cameroonian and when she talked about Black Panther her eyes lit up when she said “It’s the best movie ever”
And that really made me think. It is so so important for people to see themselves represented on screen. That is why I will always support movies that provide good representation, be it “Wonder Woman”, “ Black Panther” or more recently “Love, Simon”. And the thing is that we might not even recognize the lack of representation in some areas as long as we are not affected. I for example did not consider representation of poc in Superhero movies to be a problem for the longest time. I did not really get why Black Panther was such an important movie until I looked into her eyes.
I was ignorant because it wasn’t my own problem.
That needs to stop. We need to raise awareness. We need to support projects that give a great diversity of people the possibility to see themselves on screen when they are able to connect with a character on a deeper level.
When I now think of “Black Panther” I like it because it really was a great movie. But most importantly I think about the way my friend felt when she watched it, about the fact that so many young teenagers, kids and adults felt important and understood for the first time.
I think about the way I felt when I watched the trailer for “Wonder Woman”.
Don’t we want to give everyone the chance to experience that kind of fulfilment?
